The insurance appraisal process is a method used to resolve disputes between a policyholder and their insurance company when they can’t agree on the amount of loss following a claim. It’s outlined in many policies under the Loss Settlement or Conditions section and serves as a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Unlike litigation, appraisal is a faster, less formal way to handle disagreements over value—specifically, how much a covered loss is worth.
When either party invokes the appraisal clause, each side hires an independent appraiser. These appraisers then work together to agree on the value of the damage. If they can’t agree, they bring in an impartial third party, known as an umpire. A decision agreed upon by any two of the three will be binding.
In short, appraisal offers a way to avoid court while still settling disputes fairly and efficiently when both sides disagree on the value of a claim.
Pros of Appraisals
- The process is generally quick and efficient.
- It tends to be less expensive than going to court.
- It’s often less confrontational than litigation.
- There is no opportunity to appeal the decision.
- Each party is responsible for their own fees and costs.
- There’s no firm procedure
